The police have issued a fresh warning to potential buyers following two new cases of online car sale scams. The incidents occurred over the weekend of April 22, 2023, with one person losing $14,000 in a scam in Castries, while another individual, who had gone to meet a seller in the north of the island, was assaulted by armed individuals who stole his money.

Inspector Shervon Matthieu of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) provided the following advice to ensure safety when purchasing a vehicle from an unknown online seller:

1. Verify the seller’s identity and credentials: Prior to proceeding with any transaction, it is crucial to confirm the seller’s identity. Obtain their name, address, and phone number, and verify the provided information. Request their driver’s license and registration to authenticate their identity.
2. Conduct a background check: Utilize online search engines and social media platforms to gather more information about the seller’s background, reputation, and past.
3. Thoroughly inspect the vehicle: Whenever possible, inspect the vehicle in person before finalizing the purchase. Look for any signs of damage, wear and tear, or other defects. Request a vehicle history report to check if the car has been involved in any accidents or has outstanding liens.
4. Use a secure payment method: Avoid sending cash or making wire transfers to unfamiliar sellers. Opt for secure payment methods like PayPal or credit cards, which provide fraud protection and assistance in case of any issues or disputes.
5. Meet in a public place: If you decide to meet the seller face-to-face, choose a public location such as a coffee shop or a mall. Avoid going alone and inform someone you trust about the meeting, including details about the location and the person you are meeting.
6. Trust your instincts: If something doesn’t feel right or appears too good to be true, listen to your gut feeling. If you have any doubts or concerns about the seller or the transaction, it’s best to trust your instincts and walk away.
